Connectivity to Europe

This document is an overview of the various connectivity options available to access SpiderRock services in Europe. Client support is available by calling the support desk at +1-312-256-9602. Please email questions or comments regarding this document to: cs@spiderrock.net.

1. Internet Access

Clients may connect to the SpiderRock V8 GUI tools through Citrix Cloud using a secure, multi-factor–authenticated internet connection to monitor their EU risk and positions. Clients may also directly connect to some of our other services over the internet via encrypted connections with authentication options. While this approach is low cost and quick to set up, it is subject to potential latency and reliability considerations inherent to internet-based connectivity.

Services Available:

  • Citrix Cloud
  • MLink Live (for market data only)
  • Trade App
  • SR Emulator (for testing)

Estimated Client Setup: One day.

2. Site-to-Site VPN over Internet

This is a firm wide VPN (IPSec tunnel), from SpiderRock Firewall in Equinix FR2 (Frankfurt) to Client Firewall (or to client’s cloud environment). This is a low cost and fairly quick setup, but the client must have a firewall capable of supporting IPSec tunnels and networking expertise to configure. Again, this method is subject to the latencies and deficiencies of internet connectivity.

Services Available:

  • SpiderRock Storage Engine (SRSE)
  • FIX Gateway
  • MLink Order (for client order traffic)

Estimated Client Setup: One to two weeks.

3. Cross Connects

A cross connect is a fiber cable that runs between a SpiderRock networking device and a client’s networking device. It is available within the SpiderRock Europe datacenters only (Equinix LD4 in London, and Equinix FR2 in Frankfurt), thus requiring clients to have a presence within the datacenter as well. If a client selects this option, SpiderRock encourages them to have two 10G Single Mode Fiber (SMF) cross connects for redundancy. This is a high security, low latency, and high bandwidth connectivity option with no internet dependencies. It requires client-side network engineering. Clients assume the cost.

Services Available:

  • SpiderRock Storage Engine (SRSE)
  • FIX Gateway
  • MLink Order (for client order traffic)
  • MLink Live (for market data)
  • Trade App
  • SR Emulator (for testing)

Estimated Client Setup Effort: Three to four weeks.

4. Extranet Connectivity

SpiderRock is connected into the Options IT (OIT) extranet within Europe. The extranet serves as an intermediary network between SpiderRock and the client, providing private connectivity with dedicated bandwidth—similar to a cross-connect. Unlike a traditional cross-connect, however, the extranet enables clients located outside SpiderRock data centers to connect from any global location where OIT access is available.

This option offers secure connectivity with moderate latency and supports flexible global access. Costs vary based on bandwidth usage, and clients are responsible for these expenses. As with a cross-connect, this method requires client-side network engineering expertise.

Services Available:

  • SpiderRock Storage Engine (SRSE)
  • FIX Gateway
  • MLink Order (for client order traffic)
  • MLink Live (for market data)
  • Trade App
  • SR Emulator (for testing)

Estimated Client Setup Effort: Two weeks if client is already connected into OIT. Six to eight weeks to establish new client connectivity into the OIT extranet.

5. Direct Telco Circuits

Client can contract for a telco point-to-point circuit if they have a remote datacenter/office, desire private connectivity, and have no other connectivity options. This connectivity option has high security, moderate latency, and provides location flexibility. It is typically more expensive than other options and requires a high client-side network engineering effort. Clients assume the cost.

Services Available:

  • SpiderRock Storage Engine (SRSE)
  • FIX Gateway
  • MLink Order (for client order traffic)
  • MLink Live (for market data)
  • Trade App
  • SR Emulator (for testing)

Estimated Client Setup Effort: Eight weeks minimum, due to telco provision.

6. Collocation

Clients can also collocate their server(s) within OIT’s FR2 and LD4 datacenters to access all SpiderRock services with the lowest possible latency. This is a high-security, lowest latency connectivity option. The cost is typically more expensive than other options, which also depends on the scope of services contracted for with OIT. Clients assume the cost and OIT handles all the networking in this solution.

Services Available:

  • SpiderRock Storage Engine (SRSE)
  • FIX Gateway
  • MLink Order (for client order traffic)
  • MLink Live (for market data)
  • Trade App
  • SR Emulator (for testing)

Estimated Client Setup Effort: Variable depending on level of services.
